Survey: The Great Divergence
E
very year we ask the 350,000
financial professionals in
our network to give us their
impressions of the platforms profiled in
this book. This time around, one pattern
flashed clearer than ever: some of you
are looking for an immersive relationship
with a single “operating system” scale
provider that consolidates most of your
technology stack while others prefer to
run your practice on a curated set of
tools brought in from everywhere.
And there isn’t a lot of room in between
these two camps. As the biggest
platforms get bigger and absorb
complementary technology as well as
direct competitors, it’s now possible to
pursue an entire advisory career without
ever leaving the native ecosystem.
Differences between platforms become
more about culture than capability. They
all do more or less the same thing, which
makes the nuances that separate the
way they achieve those results more
meaningful than ever. Choice largely
becomes a question of taste.
Meanwhile, smart and ambitious people
keep building new systems and opening
them up to the industry as a whole.
They tend to start small, expanding on
word of mouth into gaps the ecosystem
providers don’t care to focus on. This
makes them perfect partners for an
advisor with a unique vision. These
advisors, in turn, become passionate
advocates for their favorite platforms and
we see that advocacy reflected in our
survey results.
But the two approaches mean radically
different constituencies within the
industry. To that end, we’re taking a
TM
few internal steps toward segmenting
results by scale. That doesn’t necessarily
mean AUM or the number of advisors
on each platform . . . this is never a
raw popularity contest. But it means
distinguishing ecosystem providers (the
“forest” in which the work of wealth
management collectively happens) from
more targeted specialists (the “trees”).
The first hint of this is with the “New and
Notable” accolade. More is coming.
As usual, for a TAMP to remain
competitive in either category, it must
excel in four core areas that collectively
add up to a fifth. The technology
must create efficiencies rather than
complications. The people behind
the platform must be problem solvers
who offer real help and coaching, so
we polled on service as well. Making
clients happy requires a differentiated
(and I can say it, “better”) investment
experience. And this year, we’re asking
about perceived value. It all adds up to
our sense of where advisor loyalties are
fiercest.
